Within any kitchen it is important that enough room is left in order for easy movement between hallway and kitchen.

Free Passage and Turning Areas

Free Passage
Kitchens and hallways must allow for free passage

Given a passage width of 1500-1700 mm a wheelchair user can turn in the passage at the same time.

In an Electric Wheelchair   1600 x 1600mm   1850 x 1850mm   2100 x 2100mm
Carer with the user
In a manual wheelchair   1750 x 1750mm   1750 x 1750mm   1750 x 1750mm
In a comfort wheelchair   2100 x 2100mm   2100 x 2100mm   2100 x 2100mm

Room for Manoeuvre

It's vital for the wheelchair user to have room enough to manoeuvre in the chair
In front of every work station there must be 1700 x 1700mm turning area

A comfort wheelchair user plus carer need a minimum 2100 x 2100mm turning area for each workstation in the kitchen

Leg room under the table top or counter may contribute part of the turning area, reducing the amount of passage space needed
